Reversi Solver: Find the Best Move

A Reversi solver tells you the strongest move in a position. ReversiAI has one built in: press ★ (best move) during any game against the AI and it analyses your exact position and marks the strongest move. In the endgame its answer is exact.

How to use the solver

  1. Open ReversiAI and start a game against the AI at any level.
  2. On your turn, press the ★ button above the board. The strongest move is highlighted for a few seconds.
  3. Play it, or play your own idea and press ↩ (undo) afterwards to compare outcomes.

The hint gives the same quality of advice whatever level you are playing, so it is just as useful against Beginner as against Master.

What the solver looks at

What it cannot do yet

The solver works on the game you are currently playing. It does not yet let you set up an arbitrary position from a book or a game you played elsewhere. If you want to analyse a specific position, replay it move by move from the start, then press ★.

It also returns the single best move rather than a full evaluation score, so it tells you what to play more than by how much you are ahead.

Using a solver to actually get better

A solver that you copy from does not teach you anything. One that you check yourself against does. The routine that works:

  1. Decide your move and the reason for it (corner safety, mobility, parity).
  2. Press ★. If it agrees, good. If not, look at what its move does that yours did not. Usually it is one of the seven principles.
  3. Undo, play the recommended move, and watch how the opponent's options change.

Ten games like this against the Hard AI will move you further than a hundred games of guessing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to use the solver?

No. The best-move finder is built into ReversiAI; open the game and press ★ on your turn.

Does the solver give the perfect move?

In the endgame, yes. Earlier in the game it gives a very strong recommendation rather than a proof.

Can I enter my own position?

Not yet. The solver analyses the game in progress. Replay the position from the start, then press the best-move button.

Does the solver depend on the difficulty I play?

No. It gives the same quality of recommendation regardless of the level you are playing against.
